Category: Cell Phone Talk
Hey all.
I figgured that since the accessible iphone and ipod touches have been around for quite a while now, it might be interesting if we posted what apps we've installed and suggest apps to people who are looking for them.
I'm currently liking:
Facebook - a facebook client
Smack me - bopit type game where you do things like shake the phone and smack the screen; this is self voicing. Open the game with vo on, double tapp to click on the unlabled object thats focused then turn vo off quickly because you can't play the game with it on.
Wavesynth - keyboard
Plus a few other drum kit apps.
Your turn.
I have
I heart radio
pandora
Fring
dragon dictation.
ootunes, australian open iphone app, and pandora
What's the australian open iphone app?
I am loving this e book app called kobo. It's awesome, though some of the buttons are unlabeled. The books are totally accessable. l!
I now am using twitbook. Its excellent, Now I don't have to put twitterific on my phone anymore. Plus I can check myspace and facebook right from that one app too.
Light sabor that allows you to by moving the phone around get those real light sabor noises. Sound hound which listens to music and identifies it. This works great in diners and resturants. Wonder radio, dragon dictate, and navigon gps.
What animal are you quiz, animal game, all recipes, facebook (Don't get it though, the one I have crashes all the time!), where is your life going? quiz, I think that's it.
Macy
If you wish to delete an ap that you don't want anymore, double tap and hold your finger on the screen. There will be a delete button, flick it and you will find it then double tap. Return to the home screen if you are done deleting apps. I don't think this works for music/videos/podcasts.
Macy
gotta add pandora! awesome especially when it's combine with sound hound.
is sound hound more accessible than shasam?
echfon is current my favourite.
Globe and Mail, Wunder Radio, Cyberpresse, USA Today, Hockey News, CP Mobile, CBC Radio, and some others. The new ESPN ScoreCentre is not accessible, and I hear MLB At Bat 2010 is a dud also from an accessibility standpoint.
I don't find facebook very accessible. It is from the point of being able to read status updates etc, but not in terms of being able to comment/read others' comments.
I agree with facebook not being accessible. Everytime I go into it, it kind of crashes, and kicks me out. And I also heard that at bat isn't accessible this season. I downloaded the free version, and it was totally inaccessible. What am I going to do without my at bat *sad face*
i don't have an iphone but i did download apps such as pandora, serious xm radio. facebook and stuff. i will get an iphone on my birthday
OK, pardon my ignorance, but the same apps will work both on the Iphone and Ipod touch? I love pandora radio, but it's not accessible over my VZW phone. Just wondering
Almost all apps will work on both the iphone and ipod touch. Pandora radio will work on the touch as long as your connected to a wireless network. If you want to use GPS apps you have to buy a special cradle for the ipod touch since it doesn't have built in gps like the iphone does.
I use pandora, serious xm app which is my favorite and most used. surprised it hasn't been braught up yet. its so so so easy to use. the fml app, local concerts, horrascopes, skype, I've been using apartment finder a lot lately lol. bing is nice for searches and real easy to see what movies are playing. fring, I've messed with some other stupid ones like I am tpain and voice changer and some lame games but. those are the useful ones.
Oh, I love pandora! Must get an Ipod touch soon then!
I have nothing else to do, so here are some aps that I'm using atm - * denotes paid although I can't remember if I paid for some or not.
handsHeater - is meant to heat your hands up by putting some form of stress on the backlite.
sleep cycle * detects which stage of sleep your in based on your movements and wakes you up at the best time for your body so that you feel refreshed. eg. You set an alarm and it will wake you up at that time or any time with in a 30 minute window to the left of that time depending on when is best. Seems to work.
Smack me - free and paid, it's a bopit style game.
thumbjam * instrument. Not overly accessible but some fairly nice sounds. It's usable if you try.
LiteSabre does what it says on the tin. New version works better with vo.
On this day * What happened on this day in history. Flicking doesn't seem to work, but everything is easy enough to find once you've done it a few times.
im+ lite - developers should be releasing an update soon to make this accessible - encoming messages aren't read but apart from that, it's a multi protocol im client. Vo doesn't always see theadds which is nice.
Net portal - free or paid, lets you access smb shares from the device.
Tone pad - draw shapes with your fingers and it'll translate them into music wich it loops. Given what it does, this is pretty accessible.
Beebot - bit of a gimick really, it's a synth but you can't really play anything with it. All it does well is piss people off.
Retro synth * another synth. Controls aren't read but if you remember there locations it's usable.
Ebay. First screen is unlabeled buttons; the first one seems to get you onto the my ebay summery screen. Pretty handy, plus I think it can send you push notifications.
iShake * - shake the device and see how quickly you can break the bottle. Vo doesn't work at all, but the scores are self voicing.
Sky news - news app.
Echofon - twitter client.
The onion - news app.
Nature space - ambient sounds. Buttons are unlabeled.
Baby scratch - scratch music. Pretty complicated to explain how to use it - if anyone has any trouble let me know.
Carnival drum - steel drum. Takes a bit of time to learn where notes are, but its not bad once you have.
As you can se, the touch is more of a leasure device atm. I do plan to do some more productive stuff on it when I can use a bluetooth keyboard.
Does anyone know of a good facebook client other than the facebook app? im+ is meant to do it, but like I say, I'm waiting on the devs.
Sorry, should have read all the posts, will check out twitbook now. It would be nice to combine fb and twitter into 1 app, but it will have to be good if it replaces echofon.
I just baught the sleep ap. but how do you no where to set the phone if you can't see the screenshots?
I just got i Heard radio, I haven't looked at facebook, but I got it too. I should have looked here first. I'm having problems with the serious XM radio ap, I also want to know if anyone knows of a good MSN WLM ap? and I also have Twitterific....
Ok, its not twitterific, its twitterella. and I no likey. LOL. So going to look for another twitter and maybe a better facebook ap. If anyone can help with good blogging aps such as MSN, Twitter, and FB. That would be greatly appreciated
I like this discussion. It's giving me ideas for apps when I get my Ipod touch. Thanks guys.:)
problems withserious xm?
I'd say fring visually impaired version, and for twitter, echofon pro. Don't ask me why, but I got Linode and dropbox for mine.
what is fring?
Oh, and what game aps are accessible? I like some of the trivia ones I've seen, but not sure if they'd work with VO.
I'd suggest soul trapper. It's a $5 app, but it's very accessible.
Soul Trapper always crashes if I try and run the demo. Fring is miranda for the IPhone.
Is there an ap wear when you get a phone call you can shake the phone to answer it? I want this on my I phone I am getting today
OK I found one it is called
mCoolPhone
mCoolPhone is another cool app for the iPhone by the makers of McallShow, Mcleaner and Msecret. But now this a seriously killer app. Yeah, the app has just been launched and expected to come up with some good updates in its next release.
For now the appp is pretty simple. To answer your call just shake the iPhone and to decline your call just flip it upside down. The app is available via Cydia for a trial period of three days but you will have to buy it for using it after that.
The flip gesture is simple and as expected works. But to our surprise mcoolphone manages to get the shake feature working flawlessly aswell. Quite unlike the My Fox browser which has given me a pain in the wrist shaking that iPhone. The app also gives an option to decline all calls one you have flipped over the iPhone.
mCoolPhone allows you to customize and detect your shake intensity (shake strength). So you optimise how rigorously you shall need to shake the iPhone to trigger the app. The app is a superhit and adds a really cool feature to the iPhone!
The app is free trial for 3 days. Buying it would cost $3. Thats really reasonable.
http://iphonehelp.in/2009/02/15/mcoolphone-shake-to-answer-flip-it-to-decline-call-on-your-iphone/
Hell'sAngel.
The picture shows the phone / touch just to the left of the pillow inbitween the sheet and the matrass. You have to pretty much put it as near to the pillow / your head with out it actually being underneath the pillow / your head. They do have a test button which will make a sound when it detects movement and they suggest that you test it out to find a place that works best for you.
One thing about this app is that flicking doesn't work overly well; you have to do a bit of exploring with your finger, but the ui is pretty simple. Plus, once you've let it learn your sleeping pattern (Takes 3 days), you only have to press a few buttons to set it up every night.
@nicky if the app is on cydia then you will have to jailbreak your phone in order to use it.
In other news, the latist update to echofon for facebook improoves accessibility somewhat but vo does get stuck in a loop often.
All this talk of apps makes me excited. I am going to the apple store today. Hopefully I'll come home with a couple apple products.:)
Sorry for the double post.:(
The apps I most enjoy are CBC Radio, At Bat 2010 (now accessible), The Hockey News, Globe and Mail, Cyberpresse, Wunder Radio, aIO to Go and Accuradio.
how do you jell brake your phone?
It's easier said than done since it depends on the phone itsself along with the operating system on it.
You don't really just casually decide to jailbreak your phone just because you want to shake to answer a call as apposed to tapping the screen.
I am using the echophon for twitter, and I do like it
To b3n does sleep cycle work on the touch and if so how much does it drain your battary? The FAQ says it only works with the iphone since there's no way to automatically shut the screen off on the touch but using screen curtin with voiceover may fix this.
how do you hang up adn answer your phone? I should get my by week from today or so. Want to know before I get it
On Smack me, how are you supposed to smack the iPod or iPhone? I've done it before, and I couldn't seem to get it when it said smack me and I'd smack it and it wouldn't work. Also, how are you supposed to pinch it? Of course I know the pinch gesture, but it still doesn't work for some reason.
can't wait til I get mine!
You'll love it, Nicky. Also, when I asked about the way to smack the iPod when you play smack me, I do have VoiceOver turned off.
OK, stupid question maybe, but I just got my Ipod touch, but I first of all can't seem to turn on VO even though I checked the radio button for voice over and hit OK. Second of all, How do you select certain artists and manually add them to your Ipod? I'm using a PC 4 now and Itunes nine.
If the screen is locked, VoiceOver will not speak to you until you press the home button to unlock the screen.
OK, I figured out the answers to my questions.:) This thing is pretty easy to use. I might try a twitter app next.:)
Some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet are: frotz, i.tv, joost, moxie, nfb films, ootunes, pzizz relax, pzizz sleep, and skype.
I think the find my I phone one is great
There is a post in the accessible devices section that talks about a screenless, voice activated GPS called the Kapten from Kapsys.
There is an I Phone app that cost $7.99 per month that does voice activated GPS.
If someone is interested in trying it out, I'd like to hear the result.
Thom
I keep going back and forth about getting one. Has it taken a long time for you guys to type?
It didn't take me long to learn how to type on it. In fact, it only took me about an hour or so.
It didn't take me long to learn how to type on it. In fact, it only took me about an hour or so.
That's the next thing I'm wanting to learn is how to type on my Ipod touch. Anyone have any tips?
split tap. don't double tap
When you say split tap, what do you mean?
Here's a question for y'all.
I know there is no returns or refunds in the ap store, so do you just wing it each time? How do you know if an ap is going to be accessible?
By split tapping, we're saying that you put one finger on the letter and touch another part of the screen to type it in. You don't put both fingers down at the same time, you just find the letter you want and touch another part of the screen to actually type it in. You'll get it once you start learning the keyboard.
That sounds really weird. Hmmm, OK, I believe you.:)
I've always double tapped, I don't get the split tap and how you do it. But I'll try it.
Split tapping, once you get used to it, is a far more efficient way of typing, at least in my experience. Typing is not fabulous, but it definitely gets the job done. bluetooth keyboard support will come this summer, which will make the iPhone my exclusive email client etc.
If you have a blue tooth head set that your using with your IPhone: will voice over come threw it? or just while your makeing a phone call?
@the rbm
It works fine; I haven't really noticed it draining my battery, although I usually plug it in to my laptop every mrning to sync new podcasts and stuff like that so it's going to be making up for any lost charge while that's going on. I don't really give the battery that much of a frashing atm; I plan to use it more for notes and stuff once I can use a keyboard so it would need to last with a fir bit of use from 9 till 4 or so.
Smack me is actually pretty simple, just smack the screen with your finger.
Pinch is also easy, put 2 fingers on the screen and quickly bring them towards each other.
Sorry for all the posts, I keep on finding other questions.
To all the people that have typing questions. Your not going to be typing an essay on it, it's just not possible to type quickly enough to do anything productive - tweeting and short emails are about the limit for me.
@polka, more often than not, if you use some comon sense you'll be ok.
If your expecting something like angry birds to work then your going to get a shock, but more often than not, you can take a good guess at the accessibility of an app by it's title and it's description.
I know that someone did get a refund from apple but it wasn't easy.
I'm starting to think that a wiki with all the accessible and inaccessible apps would be a good idea. I know we have the maccessibility list, but it's not updated that often and they don't sort the apps in the same cattergries that the app store does.
Thoughts?
I like it. Question is, whose got the time to write one up?
does anyone know if this ap is blind friendly?
Description: Nightstand Weather Clock with Music Alarms and White Noise Sleep Timer - A Highly Customizable Alarm Clock
It a free ap on Itunes
@71 I was sort of hoping it would be a community driven type thing. I would take all the apps from here, maccessibility and viphone for a start and then if people wanted to they could add apps as they see fit.
Could work, could fail, not sure.
Update on sleep cycle battery draining, I used it the other night with 100% and in the morning it was down to 95.
What's sleep cycle battery draining??
Something that has been explained before a few posts down.
It is called sleep cycle. What was meant is that this app was battery draining.
Does anyone have the name that tune game ap? If so, I need some assistance in how it works. It might be a bit better after I look at it again, but just wondering something.
Oh, and I just recently updated pandora, but haven't used it yet, was wondering if its easier to register through the iPhone, or the site on the computer. The site itself doesn't look too accessible on the computer. Was wondering if anyone else had the same issue.
I did it on the phone. pretty easy for me
I did it on the computer but it was a while ago. I'd say do it on the phone if you can since they've revamped the site and its not too friendly with any screenreader.
There is a websight called
www.icanworkthisthing.com
on the first page are links and one is voice over on the I phone,
or something like that:
If you click on this link it will tell you how to work the voice over on the phone. There is also a section in that link for aps that works well with VO:
it another websight, lion something or another, can't remember it right off hand.
I found a color identifier ap. Does anyone else have this? If so, I need help.
I just got the ESPN spelling bea app, its kind of addicting. and this other one called beap beap or something like that, kind of like a simon game where you repeat the sound by pressing the color of that sound.
Mobile Navigator is apparently $49.99 from now until the 11th of June so get it if you'd like a GPS for your phone!
mom got the simon ap, and it works really well, but then again, her ipod doesn't have Vo on it, but i can see well enough to poke the colored tiles...
Has anyone tried the Kindle ap? Does it work with vo?
I just got an iPod Touch, and am loving it.
The apps I use most are:
Tweetero--Twitter
Numbuzz--MSN, Skype, and others, but I only use it for MSN.
Skype--Skype, obviously.
Zaney Touch---Think it's like the Smack Me Game that was mentioned. It's pretty fun.
Mail--email.
Weather--weather.
I know the last two came on the iPod, but they're worth mentioning.
I'm currently looking for more games. There's a lot of games out there, just I don't know which are VoiceOver accessible
mapquest for mobile seems cool so far and its free with self voicing guides for upcoming turns and etc, airband is cool as it will let you stream the music in your mp3tunes.com account whichif you have an unlimited account and are on wi fi u don't have to worry about the size limitation of the iPhone/ iPod touch, fring for facebook, twitter, and all the instant messaging clients out there, which it still did skype but it doesnt anymore so now i need to grab skype as well, but its been finally updated for iOS4. Anyone know of an app that will let you text internationally for free? fring doesn't seem to let u do it and text+ doesn't seem to be as accessible as it once was .
I think TextFree does it, at least it's a free texting app anyway. Not sure about international, but..
Ping will let you text internationally, I hear. also, I read that Fring Visually Impaired does not work on OS 4. Can we download the sighted people's version of Fring? LOL
I'm a big fan of podcaster, an updated version of rss player. While it isn't quite as good at playing podcasts as a victor stream since you don't have as much speed control it's nice to be able to automatically download podcasts over wifi with out having to sync with itunes.
yeah but with fring u can only text other fring users unless i am missing something .. the regular version of fring works find with voice over now there are some buttons that aren't labeled but you figure out pretty quickly waht they to . will try text free as well. As for downloading podcast i just use the itunes store on the phone and download them over wi fi that way, also i find that iTunes store seem to have the most complete list of podcasts there are some i listen to that i stil haven't been able to find with other podcasting apps that are in the iTunes store
I'm enjoying a totally self voicing audio game at the moment called aurifi.
It's pretty hard to describe, but it tests your reaction times with a combination of motion controls and stereo audio. Everyone does a rubbish job of describing it, but once they've bought it, everyone seems to like it.
Remember to put your device into landscape when playing and turn vo off to concerve resources.
starbux locater, pandora, google, twitbook, ebay, amazon. can someone suggest a good bluetooth small keyboard? Thanks.
Aurifi is definitely a fun game. It's a $2 app, just so people know.
my most used iphone4 apps are the facebook app cause the new version works a treet! im+ pro for instant messaging you'll have to get the pro version the light version does not work with voice over! nimbuzz i think nimbuzz is the best app for instant messaging!! and you can use skype with it as well! and the two radio apps i use are tunein radio and radio* peace!
has Palringo been mentioned. its a really cool Miranda like app. also a mini bluetooth kb exists, amazon.com sells one for 25.99. control ipod functions, volume control of the phone/ringer and system sound and caps lock and tab key via fn keys on kb. its more of a thumb board then a 10 finger keyboard. but works great. its a bout the size of an iphone turned side ways.
Time Tuner. Its a clock radio.
Whatsapp is an excellent free texting ap. (it costs 59 pence so don't know what that is in $'s. Obviously you can only text other whatsapp users but when you install it it will look through your addressbook and find others there who have the app, plus you can send invites.
Nimbuzz is good for instant messaging on all platforms although the facebook contacts can be a bit flaky.
blackjack is adictive
for UK users there's a tv guide app which is very accessible.
For whoever it was above that said you couldnt type much on an iphone I think that it depends. I am a prefficient iphone typest and although my preference is to type on a proper keyboard I have been known to type long-ish emails and have even been zoning from my iphone when illness meant I wasn't sleeping. (and I used to be the one that couldn't understand these people who logged in from their phones and now I am one of them.)
I didn't like the iPhone for texting because I found it very slow, but I did like the facebook ap, hangman, quiz genius (the free version) and I also had a Dolly Parton one on there which was giving news and stuff about her, but it was hard to hear voiceover because it didn't do what it does with the ipod section and turn the music down, so you had the voiceover and the music for the ap going at the same volume. I did quite like the weather ap that was built into the iPhone as well.
To post 98 what model of mini bluetooth keyboard is this? I can't find it on amazon.
now have fandango, amazon, ebay, target, bestbuy, starbux, foursquare, and around me.
I was just introduced to zany touch; it is fun and adictive!
There is a free version and a $.99 version.
Works great with voiceover, but you need to turn vo off during actuall play. Lol, I select new game, difficulty, then very quickly triple tap home to turn off vo.
BTW, I had a heck of a time figuring out the pinch gesture. Put your forefinger twards the top, and your thumb twards the bottom, then pinch together.
the pinch is actually normal like the zoom feature which is a side ways pinch. so you can put your pointer on the right and your ring finger on the left and close them together on the screen.
I love echofon, foursquare, audible, all recipes, vox trek, YWCA siren, etsy addict, camfrog, dragon dictation, ooTunes, heytell, and yellowpages.
oh yes dragon dictation is great esp for those who have difficulty with texting.
also, echofon for twitter is good, however echofon for facebook is crap - fairly accessible but just not a great app and it costs.
I'm also a big fan of the netflix app. It's a pain to use with voiceover but at least I can plug my ipod touch into the stereo and listen to stuff from netflix.
netflix app?
I've just gotten into foursquare, and am really liking goodreader.
If you get anything, get aurifi. It was mentioned before but it's a really cool game. Light saber unleashed is another cool one.
the free version of IM+ does work with voice over btw
I love heytell, around me was useful a couple weeks ago when I was in NYC
There is also say text that apparently you can scan a peace of paper and it will read it or whatever, only tryed once didn't work that great but I didn't give it much of a chance.
what is four square?
There will be another accessible app for the iPhone coming out soon. It's called Papa Sangre, which is another audio only game, but I'm sure it'll be a bit more interesting than Aurifi. It's being produced by the same developer as Aurifi.
foursquare is like a thing to check in places. so your friends can see where you are. so like if you ar at pennys and open foursquare it should pop up with a list of places pennys being at the top that you are close to. you then check in there and it goes to your fb or whatever you want it to go to.
Yes, but, although I yet again sound paternalistic, don't be geolocating from your favorite club dancing your skinny little ass off, and lmfaoing on Facebook that you left your door unlocked, when you geolocated from your apartment before you left. Just use some sense with that, is all, even though many at your age have sparse little. You can always borrow some.
That's why I have mine set to pretty much silent, except for when I become the mayor, or loose my mayorships. That's the only time it'll post to twitter.
its also good for your friends to seee where u are if u want them to come join you. otherwise you can do what some do as a safety precaution and check in right before they leave
IM+ Pro, Facebook, Twitter, LiveJournal, Skype, Heytell, Pandora, Around Me, Foursquare, Dictionary, Wikipedia, Choice Of The Dragon, Choice Of The Vampire, Thumb Jam, Talking Tom, Zany Touch, Moxie, Shut The Box, Simon, Simon Says, Finger Bowling, Finger Basketball, Paper toss, more.
just got the iphone 4 for christmas. so far i love the thing. im+ and me didn't get along. so need to find another way to chat with facebook friends, but so far on it i have, horoscopes, that was 1.99, skype, .977 radio, pandora, facebook, wierd laws, wtnh which is connecticut nuse. so not much, but that's alright. i also like the youtub thing...
kind of wish there was a way to play miriani on the iphone, but that's just me...
also have a wireless keyboard from apple about the size of a normal one just with no home end page up or down or yeah. that bunch... so i like the notes thing, but the problem is that, they don't save to your computer, so need to e-mail them to myself when i'm done with one. so did that for windowslive mail...
As for the person whom asked what if an app isn't accessible a while up the board from this post you can call and they'll put you on hold while they tell the iTunes sales department about it. they do refund for inaccessible aps. I've gotten it loads of times since I use to do paid accessibility work for apple but, now switched to volunteer for reasons agreed apon between apple and I.
to get your refund just call apple at: +1(800) 692-7753
Any other questions for me my contact information is on my profile.
Palringo is pretty cool. I'm using the free version right now. It connects you to msn, aim, facebook, etc. Also the game soul trapper is pretty accessible. The only thing is, unlabeled buttons.
there is now an issue with echofon for twitter in that it crashes fairly regularly.
The best alternative is twitterrific.
I am genuinely baffled that people think facebook app is accessible - I agree that reading updates/profiles etc is fine but it's not possible to read or comment on peoples' statuses except if someone has already commented first and even then you have to click through to their profile and the update to look at the comments - you can't comment first as the buttons don't appear if you click them. Am I missing something?
I bought papa sangre and it's a pretty good game, the only thing I'll say is that it's fairly short lived (took me a day to complete it) and the ending was fairly anti climactic. At near £4 it's a fairly expensive app.
Flashlight, Goodreads, Birthdays With Push, 977 Music, Blind Memory, Secret Sound, Tick Tack Free, Four Free, Word Cookie
I have no problems with commenting with the facebook app, and I think tweetlist beats twitterific.
I use UberTwitter. I don't really want push notifications from Twitter, but you can use landscape view / see a mini browser with the content of a shortened URL.
Landscape is good for us too, as you've more room to slide your finger and find the content, etc. I have bit the bullet and learned to use flick, but find I do get lost with it sometimes, you flick far enough and it's past the screen or something.
Yes the Facebook app has its downsides, I did look at Twezr but it let you do even less. I can't figure out how to like something on Facebook with that app, so I launch Safari and go to m.facebook.com for that.
It doesn't push-notify birthdays, which would be convenient if it did. Now that there's Facebook the forty-something male memory for birthdays is no longer an excuse anymore. Would be nice to have it push those and be able to like statuses. Probably one of those flickable elements that doinks but doesn't say anything. Wonder what those do if a Braille display is connected to it?
Boxcar was a nice battery drainner, so definitely got rid of it. Apparently I must be the only one who has no problems at all with the facebook app. I use Echofon for Twitter, and it doesn't crash on me, IHeartRadio, Pandora, dictionary, haytell, FourSquare, and pretty much msot of them that have been mentioned. I got IMPlus Pro because it was on sale. I would have never baught it if it were 9.99. I got at $2.99. I hate running it though. Push never turns off. It makes me angry. I love around me for when I'm in new places, fair compare, local chat what's good, Wunder Radio, and more.
Tips and Tricks then, for the Facebook app?
I find I'm more successful putting it in Landscape and just moving my finger along as though it were a Braille page. Flick in that app can get you lost quick plus it flicks past the screen you're on so you lose yourself in the void.
But even with this, I sometimes have trouble making the item open to comment on it, and can rarely click 'Like' on something. If you're doing it, must mean I'm doing something dumb.
Care to enlighten?
I too use the M.facebook.com site, as i found the fb app a nightmare. Post 127, are you saying you are unable to like statuses via the mobile site or the app?
on the mobile site, I am able to click like on any posts.
I am using an Ipad running 4.2.
Muggle Net, Inception The App, iAmDrums, iAmGuitar, Papa Sangre, BopIt, , Moxie 2.
On the app I can't like statuses or even always get them to open.
I use a combination of Mobile Site and iPhone app.
I just got Navigon today for about half the price.
i pan to get an IPhone in the next couple weeks but need to find some apps in certain fields. First, what all is there for gps, and what's the advantages and disadvantages to each? Second what apps can scan barcodes? And third is there apps to alert you to weather alerts and the like, say if there were a storm warning in your local area.
Navigone is the popular GPS app and right now its half price AT $30 for all of US & Canada. There are free onces like the maps app on the phone, mapquest for mobile, and skobbler, which still needs to have some buttons labeled but still pretty usuable. Red Lazer is a bar code scanner but ore for the purpose of figuring out how much something can cost u if u shopped elsewhere. BTW any good free or RSS Reader reccomendations?
Just got my iPod Touch and LOVE IT!!! Anybody tried WordWars? I think I accidently got the extreme version 'cuz now it's not working right. Applevis.com is awesome BTW. I also use Pandora and I'm playing with Aurifi but I don't get it...
Correction: the game is WordWarp, not Word Wars. Lol. But the trouble I'm specifically having is how do you put in the words? I use a wireless keyboard because I have CP and I notice that using a touch screen and navigating the iPod's typing system is very difficult for me. Anyway, `so how would I enter the words using a wireless keyboard.
For those saying they never have problems with the Facebook app, it would be nice to get tips.
Am rethinking apps for Twitter so thanks for all you have posted here.
Steve Jackson's Sorcery! The Shamutanti Hills
Hey I just got facely - a different Facebook app. I find it kinda sluggish on the iPod Twitch but the layout is easier to find things, like posts, and comment on stuff.
the face book app works fine for me. they did change something though. cuase when i first got it. it wasn't very accessible. but now it's fine!
Wow, a lesson to you all, always make sure you copy your post before you hit that post button. I don't know if I could've written the below again.
Looking over this, I thought I'd toss some of the apps I use up here, with descriptions for those that might not know what they are. so, here we go.
First up, heytell. IThink of it sorta as a voiceclip messenger. IN other words, you can send short messages to your friends that also have it, but it's whatever you're saying (or your background maybe if you want someone to hear something.) IT's free.
Talkatone is an app that allows you to get access to google chat, but much more importantly and useful, allows you to make and receive calls with a google voice account if you have one. They just came out with a new version, so I haven't had time to see if they've broken anything accessibilitywise, but it's generally worked decently the few times I've used it.
As for my twitter app, I'm currently using tweetlist. IT unfortunately doesn't have push notifications, but has very good lists support, and unlike lamented echophone, it doesn't crash every 45 seconds. (Note that this echophone issue seems to only be seen by some. I'd venture to say that I hear about it more with those of us using 3gs than the IDevice 4's.)
The google voice app is a good one for if you have google voice. It allows you to listen to voicemails etc. The only issue I've seen is, once again, a really bad habit of crashing for us 3gs types.
AN app that I've heard good things about but haven't gotten around to testing is viber. IT's supposed to be a skype sort of program, but with better quallity audio. OR so I'm told.
To add to the pile of apss that I've installed but haven't tested yet is an app called tripdeck. It's a program that is supposed to help you keep track of your travel plans, and apparently even check on flight status. It's one I plan on using on my next big trip around the country. I'll add in on this one that a fellow blind individual told me about this one, so I'm rather confident that it's accessible.
IN the same vein, there's an app I've only started using, but looks to be very useful and powerful. IT's an app called siri. Basically, it's sort of a personal assistant. You tell it (and I do mean tell it as in voice) what you're looking for, and it'll do it's best to accomplish it for you. This apparently includes reserving seats at a restaurant, ordering a taxi, getting info on movies, etc.
It's been mentioned already, but I highly suggest the dropbox app. It's a good way of getting files onto your device that the overly paranoid *insert rant* apple won't allow you to put files directly onto the device.
There're several apps you can get that will interface with the dropbox app as well, text editors as just 1 example.
The navigon and around me gps apps have already been mentioned, but I'm going to throw in 1 more: sendero GPS. While it can't necessarily do a ton, it will give you some realtime information that the other 2 sadly don't. (I'm hoping to try to get in touch with navigon and see if they'll put in a couple of these features, but we'll see.)
Next, let's go with object recognition. The one that seems to be hailed as the best of these is OMoby. Basically it allows you to take a picture of an object (a random box in your kitchen for example) and it'll try to tell you what that box is. Think of it sorta as a package scanner. It works better on the IPhone 4, if for no other reason than it has a built in flash, where the 3gs doesn't.
I have other apps on this thing, but the above are the ones I think people would find interesting. Hope some find this useful, and if anyone has questions about these apps, or voiceover stuff in general, drop me a PM. (I'll try to check back on this board periodically but my memory for such things sucks.)
hmm skype, facebook, echophone, all work for me, pandora, moxi, yay moxi lol, omobi, prefer noogle noggles, they do the same thing. the camera, since it helps to have auto focus. lol. hmm, .977 radio, usa radio, aka radiostations from the us.hmm plain text, so i can use my iphone with keyboard as a note taker, the youtube app is pretty good.
the app that i can't wait for is the bookshare app. said to be 20 dollars, but it is seeming well worth the price, you can read books from bookshare, store them etc. hmm can't wait for that to come out.
.
I like Noogle Noggles better than O Mobi, but they do the same thing.
The new Looktel Money Reader app is amazing. It's $1.99 and definitely worth it. It runs a continuous video stream so once the camera sees the bill, identification is instant. No need to try and take a picture and wait for it to process. Plus, it will even identify folded bills. I've gotten it to read bills that were folded into quarters. I have one of the iBill readers that cost $99, and the Looktel app on my iPod touch identifies bills even faster than the iBill. It's not even close. It's a fantastic app.
I also really like Light Detector since I live and work with a bunch of sighted people who leave lights on all the time then wonder why I don't turn them off. (duh).
And I'm totally hooked on Godvill. It's the dumbest game ever but addictive. Basically, you have a hero who fights monsters and completes quests and has random adventures. As the God to your hero, you can influence his actions by encouraging, punishing or sending him instructions with God voice commands. The hero may or may not listen to your suggestions, but it's fun to yell at him anyway. The hero's ultimate goal is to collect 1000 gold bricks and build a temple in your honor. You can also send your hero to the arena to battle against other heros. The hero keeps on with his mission even when you aren't logged in so you can be as involved with his adventures as much or as little as you like. The hero keeps a diary so you can see what he/she's been up to. The app is totally accessible. The only glitch is that voiceover causes the diary page to crash on occasion. I've found that if you clear out the app switcher and turn off VO while the app is loading, you will have more success getting the diary page to run correctly. Once you set up a username and password from the app, you can log on to the website and play there as well. The website is in beta so you have to get an invite or join from the app before playing the web based version. The website is www.godvillegame.comm.
Yeah Godville is cool. I play it on the website though, because I also had the diary crash.
Could it be that the facebook app is more accessible on the iphone 4 than the 3gs?
I can read things on it, but have trouble commenting and liking.
Also, how is it that voiceover seems to flick past the bottom of the screen? It beggs the question of how people not using it scroll around. Is there a scroll button somewhere that v/o doesn't read? and if so, maybe the reason you can't comment on something on the facebook app is because you can't click something that's not on the screen. I really need to figure out a way to use facebook though, any suggestions would be awesome.
I use heytell, IM plus, spelling bee, and hangman but I have a bunch of other ones I haven't quite tested out yet. I know there is navigon kapten and tom tom for gps options but do all of them allow pedestrian directions as well or just navigon. The one thing I find annoying about iPhone apps in general is the android market has most of the same apps for android phones and they are mostly free while some of the apps you pay as much as $49.00 for. Anyway, on a side note other than maccessibility is there any other websites that might list accessible apps I can try. they don't update maccessibility it seems.
Check out www.applevis.com for accessibility reviews. It has a nice database of app reviews submitted by voiceover users. There's usually a few app reviews added every day and as the number of users grow, so do the amount of reviews. It's a useful site for discovering apps.
Papa Sangre is one hell of a crazy game. I love it. :)
I'm still stuck on the chess board level. LOL
Other apps I've got:
Amazon
Barnes & Noble
Track This
Southwest {airlines}
iNotePad
Secret Diary
King's Corner
apps I have, iPinion, Iheartradio, iLullaby, baby soother, KLove, Ringtone maker, Navigon, Skype, Light detector, star maker, radio.com, net flicks (not very accessible), Kayak, southwest, IM plus, beep beep, brain tooner, spelling bee, hangman, heytell, around me, routeasy, facebook, peekaboo, ringtones, and talking tom. On the southwest app, it doesn't seem to be all that accessible with voiceover, I'd like to know how you can use it.
VO doesn't read the calendar to chose your travel date. I was just looking at ticket prices, but haven't actually bought a ticket using the app yet.
Stem Stumper - Puzzle Game for Blind/VI
7 Little Words, Word Popper, Sudoku4All.
Well I like the Audible and Facebook apps. I have the Facebook app on my IPhone and then both on my IPod Touch since I use the IPod for audiobooks.
hmm i have a windows live/msn messenger app and it works well.
Ariadne GPS
There are hundreds of gps apps. Do we really need one more?
Ariadne GPS is more than a simple gps app.
Besides offering you the possibility to know your position and to get information about the street, the number, etc. it also lets you explore the map of what's around you.
What do we mean by saying "explore"? You'll deal with a talking map. If you have voice over activated on your device, you will be able to know the street names and numbers that are around you by touching them. Just put your finger on the screen of your device, when showing the map and moving it you will be told the info's about the street you're touching. Your position is on the center of the screen. What's in front of you is on the top half of the screen and things behind you are on the bottom half of the screen.
You can also explore a different region than the one around you by telling the app the street and the city.
You can ask for information about your position at any time, also activating a function, called monitor, that will give you this info periodically (Please read the note below).
This app has also got some other useful features that might help when walking or traveling by bus, train etc.
If you add your favourite points to the app database, you can be alerted when you get closer than a certain distance to one of them.
This app is completely accessible using voice over and gives you access to information that are normally unavailable to people using the speech synthesizer and can be therefore especially useful to blind and partially sighted people.
Note: The features of the app are based on the gps positioning service and on a remote server for what concerns the information on the position. These informations might not be accurate, due to the gps accuracy, which is generally below fifteen metres but in some cases can be of a few tens of metres and to the remote service, which might be unresponsive in certain moments (the app will tell you if that's the case).
The aim of the app is giving you an idea of your position and what is around you.
Please do not completely rely on it.

IFarkle
also on the bar code scanning front, oMoby doesn't seem to like me that much. But then again positioning a camera I guess can be pretty hard if you can't see.
I've been playing Hanging With Friends and its pretty fun.
What is IFarkle. Description, please?
Is hanging with friends accessible by VO?
ok, I read back around poste 100 that the IPhone doesn't duck the voice on V/O if your listening to music? Is that true?
Blio, iBooks, Audible, Facebook, TweetList, FourSquare, Echofone, Papa Sangre, Blind Memory, Zaney Touch, Smack Me, Stem Stumper Lite, IM+, Skype, Google Voice, TalkATone, Pandora, Bing Music, .977 music, TuneIn Radio, Ping Pong, Tennis, Adaptive Trivia, HR Derby,Dropbox, Filer Lite, All Recipes, Mobile Card, Subway, Chipotle, Starbucks, Alarmed, Podcaster, iBlink Radio, will post more when I get them or if I forget. can't wait to get an iPhone in November when my contract ends :)!
I just got my first IPhone and love it! There's so many posts to read through, I'm sure someone has asked this already, but does anyone know of a good free texting app? I think my mom has text plus on hers, but you have to create some sort of number for it I guess.
Focus for facebook. it's a more simpler app for facebook on the iPhone and makes liking/commenting on statuses easier
Can somebody recommend a good TV guide app? I looked on applevis& allof them (except i.tv which has become inaccessible) are labled partially accessible.
Definitely one of my favourite iPhone/iPod apps right now is Vizwiz.
This is a little bit like the likes of Omoby, where you take a picture of something and upload it, but the difference here is that you can actually record a specific question, like, can you tell me what this looks like please? I've found the answers to be very good and descriptive, and if not, they tell you exactly why they can't see the photo etc, so that you can try again.
If anyone would like to hear a review of Vizwiz, you can check out a podcast I recorded on it, by visiting:
http://www.blindtechsupport.net
and clicking on podcasts and Iphone/iPod
I like voxer, the time warner cable ap, foursquare, focus for facebook, windows live messanger, and the pandora ap.
I like:
netflix, facebook, im plus pro, pandora, unlimmited tones (must be jailbroken), craigs pro for everything craigslist, shazam for getting music info, hulu plus, sirius XM, Ootunes radio, heytell, vizwhiz, I can go on but for now can't think of other ones
Oddly, Papa Sangre won't work on my iPod Touch anymore with iOS 5.1. It starts and then crashes, taking me back to the home screen but staying in the app switcher. Uninstalled it and reinstalled it to no avail.
Rather disappointing as sometimes there's just nothing like running around in the bowels of the underworld escaping hungry hogs. But, should I get an iPhone, I'm sure it will work. The 4S has a better processor than does the iPod Touch anyway.
And, even if it doesn't, it was worth the 6 bucks or so - that's less than an evening's entertainment and I got quite a few hours of fun out of it, won it several times.
